Gemini SEO means making your business easy for Google Gemini to find, understand and cite when it answers questions. In practice that comes down to a few things: let Google crawl your site, do not block Google-Extended if you want Gemini to use your content, keep your Google Business Profile and entity details consistent, and publish clear, specific pages that answer the questions your customers ask.

No one outside Google knows exactly how Gemini picks its sources, and no AI company publishes its ranking formula. What you can do is remove the obvious blockers, give Gemini good material to work with, and measure what happens. This guide walks through each step.

How does Gemini decide what to show?

Gemini answers in two broad ways. Sometimes it answers from what the model already learned during training. For many questions, especially ones about current information, local businesses, prices or products, it can ground its answer with Google Search: it looks up relevant pages and uses them to build the response, often with links to sources.

That grounding step is where most of your opportunity sits. If Gemini searches and your page is relevant, accessible and clear, you have a chance of being used and cited. If your site is hard to crawl, vague about what you do, or contradicts itself, Gemini has little reason to pick you over a competitor whose page answers the question directly.

Keep in mind that answers vary. The same question can produce different results depending on wording, location, time and personalisation, and answers from the Gemini API can differ from the consumer Gemini app. Treat any single answer as a sample, not a verdict.

What is Google-Extended and should you block it?

Google-Extended is a control token you can use in robots.txt. It is not a separate crawler that visits your site; Google still crawls with Googlebot. Google-Extended tells Google whether content it crawls may be used for Gemini model training and for grounding Gemini answers.

This is the part many site owners get wrong:

  • Blocking Google-Extended can stop Gemini from using and citing your content. If your goal is Google Gemini search visibility, blocking it works against you.
  • Blocking Google-Extended does not affect AI Overviews, AI Mode or regular Google Search. Those run on Googlebot and normal Search eligibility.
  • Blocking Googlebot removes you from Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Almost no business should do this.

If you previously added a blanket “block all AI bots” rule, check what it actually covers. A typical rule looks like this:

User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /

If you want to show up in Gemini, remove that block or change it to Allow: /. You can confirm what your robots.txt allows with the free AI Crawler Checker, and our guide to allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt covers the other engines too.

Are you eligible for Google Search in the first place?

Because Gemini can ground answers with Google Search, your basic Search health matters. Google says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal Search eligibility, and the same SEO fundamentals apply. For Gemini, the same groundwork helps:

  • Your important pages are indexed (check in Google Search Console).
  • Pages are not blocked by noindex tags or nosnippet rules you did not intend.
  • Key content is in the HTML text, not only inside images or scripts that fail to render.
  • Each service, location and product has its own page with a clear title.

If Google cannot index a page, Gemini’s search grounding is unlikely to find it either. Fix this before anything else. For the AI Overviews side, see optimising for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.

How do you make your business a clear entity for Gemini?

Gemini has to work out which business you are, especially if your name is common. A dental clinic in Dubai, a bakery in Lahore and a plumber in Austin can all share a name with someone else. Clear, consistent identity signals help.

Google Business Profile

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile is one of the most direct ways to tell Google who you are. Fill in your category, address or service area, phone, hours, website, services and description. Keep it current. If you change your phone number or move, update the profile the same day.

Consistent NAP everywhere

Use the same name, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and the directories you appear on. Small differences, like an old suite number or a different trading name, make it harder for engines to match all of those listings to one business.

Structured data on your site

Add schema.org markup that describes your business: Organization or a LocalBusiness subtype such as Dentist, LegalService or Restaurant, with address, telephone, openingHours, areaServed and sameAs links to your official profiles. Structured data must match what is visible on the page. The free AI Schema Generator can create the JSON-LD for you, and our article on entity SEO for AI search explains why this matters.

What content helps you show up in Gemini?

When Gemini grounds an answer, it needs pages that answer the question clearly. The pages most likely to be useful share a few traits:

  • The answer comes first. Open each page or section with a direct answer in two or three sentences, then add detail.
  • Specific facts. Prices or price ranges, service areas, opening hours, turnaround times, what is included and what is not.
  • One topic per page or section. A page about “emergency boiler repair in Leeds” beats a page that lists twenty services in one paragraph.
  • Question-style headings. Use the words customers actually type or say, such as “How much does a root canal cost in Sydney?”
  • Visible authorship and dates. Show who wrote or reviewed the page and when it was last updated.

A well-written FAQ section on each service page also helps, because it gives Gemini short, quotable answers. See how to write FAQs AI assistants quote and how to write content AI assistants cite for detailed examples.

Gemini can also draw on what other sites say about you. Reviews, directory listings, local press and “best of” lists give it independent confirmation. Our guide to citation sources, profiles and directories explains where to start.

How do you test your Gemini visibility?

Start by asking Gemini the questions your customers ask. Not your brand name alone, but real buying questions:

  1. Write down five to ten questions, such as “best family dentist in Dubai Marina” or “who does same-day laptop repair in London?”
  2. Ask each one in Gemini and note whether you are mentioned, where you appear in the answer, and which sources are linked.
  3. Ask brand questions too: “What is [your business]?” and “How do I contact [your business]?” Check that the details are correct.
  4. Repeat on a different day. Answers change, so one test proves little.

Pay attention to the cited sources. If Gemini keeps linking a particular directory or comparison article for your category, being listed there accurately is a practical next step.

How do you measure progress over time?

Manual checks are a good start but they are hard to compare. For measurement you want the same questions asked on a schedule, with answers, mentions and sources stored so you can see trends. Track:

  • Mention rate: how often you appear across repeated answers to the same question.
  • Competitors named: who appears when you do not.
  • Cited sources: which pages Gemini relies on for your category.
  • Accuracy: whether Gemini states your phone, website and other facts correctly.

Make one change at a time where you can, then re-test after Google has had time to recrawl. Our guide to measuring AI visibility improvements goes into more detail.

How Onxeera helps

Prompt Research lets you add the questions your customers ask and asks Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude through their official APIs with web search on. It stores each answer, the brands mentioned, their order and the cited sources, and highlights gaps where a competitor is named and you are not. Remember that API answers can differ from the consumer Gemini app, so use it to spot patterns, not to predict a single answer.

The AI Visibility Fixer scans your live site for crawler access, schema, entity details, FAQs and local signals, lists issues with evidence and generates fixes you can re-test. There is a free plan, and paid plans are listed on the pricing page.

Gemini SEO checklist

  1. Confirm Googlebot can crawl and index your key pages.
  2. Check robots.txt and make sure Google-Extended is not blocked if you want Gemini citations.
  3. Complete and update your Google Business Profile.
  4. Match your NAP across your site and major listings.
  5. Add accurate Organization or LocalBusiness schema.
  6. Write answer-first pages with specific facts and question headings.
  7. Ask Gemini your customers’ questions, record results, and re-test on a schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended only controls whether Google may use your content for Gemini training and grounding. AI Overviews, AI Mode and regular Google Search rely on Googlebot and normal Search eligibility, so blocking Google-Extended does not affect them. It can, however, stop Gemini from using and citing your pages.

Is Gemini SEO different from regular SEO?

Mostly it builds on regular SEO. Gemini can ground answers with Google Search, so indexing, clear pages and strong local signals still matter. The extra steps are checking your Google-Extended setting, making your business facts consistent across the web, and testing real customer questions in Gemini to see whether you are mentioned.

Why does Gemini give different answers to the same question?

AI answers vary with wording, location, time and personalisation, and the Gemini API can respond differently from the consumer app. That is why you should ask the same questions repeatedly and look at how often you appear across many answers rather than judging from a single response.

Can I pay Google to appear in Gemini answers?

Google does not offer a way to buy a mention inside an organic Gemini answer. Your odds improve through crawlable pages, accurate business information, useful content and good coverage on sources Gemini cites. No one can guarantee a mention, so measure results over time instead.
